More reasons why we don’t ‘do abs’

Check out this recent article from NYT:

This article quotes Stuart McGill, a spine specialist referenced extensively in crossift literature, about some of the non-sense ideas that pass as ‘core training.’ McGill argues against the idea that one should pull in their belly button in order to brace the spine. There certainly are appropriate ways to brace the spine, but pulling in the belly button isn’t one of them. This issue is particularly important to me given Father Andrew’s back surgery. But thankfully, his back is even stronger now than before he started crossfitting, thanks, I believe, to Glassman’s holistic approach to fitness. We’ll talk more about bracing soon.

  1. Planks and overhead lifts are the bomb! Crunches and sit-ups can suck it. I love geting medical/scientific backing for what we're already doing… 🙂
