Agave – The Great Debate

Back in October Mara wrote this post on using agave as an alternate sweetener to sugar. Since then we have all been gung ho about the option, using it in all our drinks and desserts. Then, a few days ago Crossfit Invictus dropped a bomb, in this post ripping agave a new one for being “not Paleo and it’s definitely not good for you.” Ahhh!! Where is the truth?

Stepping boldly into the blogosphere Mara added a post to Mark’s Daily Apple, a blog on primal fitness that many of us read and follow. So far the post is getting some great responses. Read it here and please add comments!!

    It’s fairly concise and easy to read:

    But I’ll sum up here anyway:

    1) Agave nectar is highly refined from a starch to a fructose rich syrup. It is literally High Fructose Agave Syrup. Remind you of anything?

    2)Fructose is not in fact the same thing found in fruit. In fruit, it is in the form called levulose, which is processed in the intestine. So eating Agave Nectar is NOT like eating fruit.

    3)Fructose is processed by the liver, converted directly into triglicerides or saved as fat. This is bad. It does not immediately raise insulin levels because it is not converted into blood glucose. This sounds good, but it isn’t, because what actually happens is much worse, and much more sneaky.

    4)It also inhibits Leptin levels, which are the hormone that tells your body you’re full. So fructose (agave) makes you want to eat more and more. Also bad.

    So, in conclusion, Agave is in fact the devil. It is just as processed as white sugar, packs a heavier load of fructose than High Fructose Corn Syrup, has been shown to directly cause higher LDL cholesterol, visceral fat storage, higher triglicerides, and to inhibit satiation.

    Pretty sobering stuff. I think I may have to go throw our bottle of the golden death away…

    • The wonderful dream comes crashing down! Nooo!! Are we then doomed to a life of bland, unsweetened food forever? Or is it honey or nothing?

  2. Well, the MDA peeps say that you just have to let your taste buds and body adjust to eating less sugar and eventually things that don’t seem sweet now will seem sweet. Fruit will seem super sweet. Cashews will seem like candy. Dried unsweetened coconut will seem like candy. And then real candy will seem unbearably sweet. So the story goes…
